Schools as Places of Hope

Paris, France. Meeting between Waldorf representatives and the UNESCO.

At the end of May, 2026, a delegation from the European Council for Steiner Waldorf Education (ECSWE) met with staff from the Education Sector of UNESCO, the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization. The discussion between the representatives at UNESCO headquarters in Paris focused on the future of education in the context of current crises in the economy, geopolitics, the environment, and healthcare. The realities in which young people are growing up today can lead children and adolescents to view their own educational paths and development from a rather hopeless perspective. This makes it all the more important for schools to provide a safe space where not only knowledge is imparted, but qualities such as self-efficacy, a sense of belonging, and agency are also fostered. Educational priorities of the UNESCO department that overlap with those of ECSWE include: the appropriate use of digital media and AI, curriculum content on environmental sustainability and peace education, as well as in-depth trainings and support for teachers.
