Helmy Abouleish Meets Annalena Baerbock

During her visit to Cairo on the 12th of February, Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock also met Sekem Executive Director Helmy Abouleish.

The German politician of the Green Party had expressed the wish to meet not only politicians but also representatives of civil society organisations to learn about initiatives and measures on climate protection in the country. In this context, the German Embassy and the German Academic Exchange Service invited Sekem. In the conversation, Helmy Abouleish explained the great potential of organic and biodynamic agriculture in terms of offsetting CO2 based on Sekem’s experience over the past decades. The initiative is currently developing a model with which organic farmers are adequately remunerated for their earnings regarding CO2 sequestration. Annalena Baerbock: «On the issue of climate protection, we now have the chance to expand our cooperation – and also great development opportunities from which many people can benefit – in jobs, education, energy supply and a clean environment. Tackling the climate crisis is no longer a niche issue in the world, and this is also thanks to an active civil society, especially many young people, who demand that we politicians preserve the planet for their generation. I am convinced that civil society playing a strong roll is crucial for a successful COP 27.» COP 27, the 2022 UN International Climate Change Conference, will take place in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, in November.
