Brussels, Belgium. Holistic education project for the healthy development of children and young people in the digital age.
One of today’s greatest pedagogic challenges is teaching children and young people how to use digital media responsibly. It’s about finding a balance between basic digital literacy, essential for daily life as well as for many educational and professional fields, and a personal sovereignty that allows young people to decide for themselves when, for what purpose, and how much they use digital media. The EU-funded HERMMES project addresses precisely this need. The name is short for Holistic Education, Resilience and Media Maturity in Educational Settings.
HERMMES includes several partner organizations based in various European countries. Many of them follow an educational approach according to Waldorf pedagogy. The overarching goal of the project is to support educators, parents, and caregivers in helping students develop a mature and critically conscious approach to digital technology, including the internet in general, AI tools like ChatGPT, and social media. A key focus of the project is defining appropriate use of digital technology at different developmental stages of children and adolescents.
The HERMMES website provides a wealth of easily accessible resources for this purpose. In addition, the project offers three training programs for parents, caregivers, teachers, and educators. These courses impart practical knowledge and everyday skills that enable participants to share holistic media literacy with those around them.
