Eduardo Rincón has been co-leader of the Agriculture Section for almost two years. His name is surprising. Rincón, which translates as “nook” or “corner,” doesn’t seem to suit him at all. When I talk to Eduardo, I sense the opposite: openness and expansiveness. Then I discover my answer: in ecology, Eduardo’s life’s work, a niche is the little nook—the refuge or sanctuary—in which something can unfold and develop in the company of others. In this issue, where we touch on the challenges faced by today’s farmers, Eduardo describes how he nurtures and encourages this.
