For the Benefit of Calves

By 2030, all Demeter farms are to let their calves stay with the mother for at least 120 days.

At its general meeting on the 3rd of July, the Association for Biodynamic Agriculture decided that mother-cow based calf rearing should be included in the Demeter standards. This type of rearing is not only beneficial for animal welfare, but also reduces the need for the use of antibiotics, which is otherwise often necessary in fattening farms. During the 120 days in with the calves stay with their mother, they can enjoy their full nursing period and fully develop their immune system. Since this decision also raises many questions for farmers, including space, loss of milk and rearing, implementation is requested to be staggered until 2030. The cows and calves should be pleased!
