Brussels, Belgium/Strasbourg, France. Opportunity to influence the new legislation.
Negotiations regarding the planned deregulation of genetically modified plants in the EU are nearing completion. Despite numerous critical voices from associations such as the Biodynamic Federation Demeter International (BFDI), European foreign ministers voted in favor of the deregulation proposal agreed upon by the Council, the Parliament, and the Commission. As the next step, the European Parliament must ratify the outcome of the trilogue negotiations. Prior to this, the Parliament—unlike the Council—had advocated for mandatory labeling and traceability requirements for products containing genetic engineeringl and, in its official statement, had rejected the patenting of items such as genetically modified seeds. At present, it remains unclear whether these positions will be included in the final legislative text. To remind Parliament members of their obligation to consumers and farmers, the BFDI—among others—is offering various tools for taking action.
