Works by Swedish painter Hilma af Klint and Russian painter Wassily Kandinsky are being exhibited together in Düsseldorf through early August. The exhibition title, “Dreams of the Future,” anchors something visionary in the paintings. At the beginning of the 20th century, af Klint was closely associated with theosophy and anthroposophy and sought to express spiritual truths. Both artists had a connection with Rudolf Steiner, and af Klint’s has been minimally illuminated to date, says Anne Weise from the Rudolf Steiner Archive. In this issue, we pair a review of the exhibition with a review of Albert Vinzens’s biography of Renate Riemeck, whose connection to anthroposophy was influential in her complex life and legacy.
