The Fairer School Index

Bristol, United Kingdom. A Waldorf school in first place.

When parents have the privilege of being able to choose a school for their children, the quality of the institution naturally plays an important role. Ranking lists provide guidance in the selection process, clearly showing what a school has to offer in terms of educational quality. When institutions evaluate the performance of schools, they are usually based on students’ examination results. However, the results of these rankings do not take into account the different conditions under which the schools operate. The Fairer Schools Index, developed by the University of Bristol, therefore applies different standards. The index takes into account the fact that some schools have to make do with fewer financial resources and that a variety of factors influence pupils’ learning performance. For example, the index only compares pupils with a similar socio-economic background. In the Fairer Schools Index 2025, Steiner Academy Hereford came first in the national comparison. It is the first publicly funded Waldorf school in England.
