The scaffolding around the new Arlesheim Clinic building was removed recently. Now we see what we already suspected more clearly: it is a marvel. This impressive structure has a total floor space of 13,200 square meters [142,083 sq ft]. It towers above the peaked roofs of the private houses surrounding it, and yet it seems light; it’s an imposing, angular edifice, and yet it feels charming. This is probably due to the round windows in the attic and, above all, to the building material: wood. Thus, the material of the First Goetheanum returns to anthroposophical large-scale construction, in quite a different way, in and for a different time, and yet in a related manner—don’t you think?
