In Her Boots

Newington, Connecticut. In Her Boots is an open discussion group on mental and emotional health for women farmers with and without a biodynamic background, in New England. The monthly meetings take place partly online and partly in person. In the intentional space, the women discuss topics such as grief, spirituality, and aging. They also celebrate annual festivals together. An interview with the social worker and leader of the circle, Michelle Louise Bicking.

Why do you think there is a need for a women farmers’ circle that focuses on mental health?

Globally, female-identified farmers of all ages and backgrounds are among the most neglected professionals in the agricultural sector. They have extremely limited opportunities to address mental health issues privately or publicly.

What was the intention behind setting up the discussion group exclusively for women farmers and not for a mixed group?

The intention for the circle is to create a safe space in which participants can explore current stress factors – together with other women who have had similar experiences. To do this, it is important not to fear being outed to male colleagues.

How does one create a space of intimacy and trust online?

All meetings are by invitation only to minimize disruption and ensure the safety of all participants. My role is to lead discussions on relevant topics. There is a new focus in each session. I hope that the women in the circle feel heard and seen as they use the time and space to address concerns that are important to them and their lives.
