Cairo, Egypt. A sports club for children in rural areas of Egypt.
The Egyptian organization Sekem is active across many different spheres of life. One of its initiatives is the Sekem Sports Academy: to provide village children with meaningful leisure activities, it offers soccer practice twice a week as well as regular physical education classes. Currently, about 80 children are participating in the program. Sports not only foster skills such as teamwork, discipline, a sense of responsibility, and fair play, but also teach children that it’s worth sticking with something in order to discover and develop their own potential. Currently, it is mainly boys who participate in the soccer training. This has led to the vision of a Sekem Green Club that would also offer other sports, such as handball or gymnastics. The hope is to reach more girls through this initiative. The after-school program is also set to be expanded so that children from more distant villages can participate via transportation services.
