Cairo, Egypt. 2025 is the 100th anniversary of Rudolf Steiner’s death. How does he live on in individual people? Nana Woo, eurythmy therapist and director of the Women’s Health Project in Sekem, Egypt, gives her answers.
How can people around you tell that you are interested in Rudolf Steiner?
In Egypt, people in my community are not familiar with Rudolf Steiner, and therefore, would not be able to directly comment on my interest in him. However, they may perceive that my intentions and approach to life slightly differ from those of others they meet in their daily interactions. I find profound fascination in the simple, often subtle details of life, such as the colors of a sunset, the shape of a cactus, the sounds of Arabic letters, or the movement of a butterfly. I could easily engage in long discussions on such topics. Additionally, I approach life’s challenges and crises with openness, viewing each as an invitation to discover a hidden gift. Through these perspectives, others may sense my alignment with the teachings of Rudolf Steiner, even if they are not consciously aware of it.
In which human encounter did you feel close to Rudolf Steiner?
I feel closest to Rudolf Steiner when I meet “teachers” who are deeply dedicated to fostering others’ growth. I once had a teacher who inspired me so much that I asked if I could become his apprentice. And he replied, “I am like you; I could be your ‘listening ear,’ but not your master. You have also become my master.” These teachers offer a space where I can express myself freely, without fear of judgment, and simply be heard. Their presence brings a sense of peace and clarity, and I don’t always feel the need for advice from them—just their gentle and compassionate understanding. Before reaching out to them, I often pause and ask myself, “What would they say?” This helps me align my thoughts and feelings with my own wisdom. When I think of them, I feel a warmth in my chest and a smile on my face, knowing that I’m building trust within myself. In these encounters, I sense the spirit of Rudolf Steiner within them, guiding me toward the person I hope to become.
