Deir al-Balah, Palestine. Emergency pedagogy in Gaza.
There is still little stability in the daily lives of people in Gaza. Depending on political and military decisions, a family may lose their home, their income, or loved ones overnight. The “Healing & Learning” emergency education project at the Nawa Center in Deir al-Balah offers children some continuity and reliability by keeping its doors open every day. There, they receive psychosocial support and can participate in educational programs, as well as artistic and athletic activities. Despite everything the children have to endure, the pictures they paint depict houses, trees, flowers, and the sea, according to Amal Al-Shurafa, the association’s project manager. The children still dream. “Healing & Learning” provides a safe space for these dreams. This also gives hope for Gaza’s future to Amal Al-Shurafa and the other adults who care for the children.
