Kassel, Germany. In the Young Eurythmy Performance project, or YEP! for short, an international group of young people aged 18 to 24 spend three months rehearsing a eurythmy piece and then go on tour with it for another three months. Participation is free of charge. An interview with the director, Aurel Mothes.
How does the Young Eurythmy Project take place?
YEP! has an existential, dynamic, and youth seminar-like character. It is aimed at young people who want to experience an unmediated deepening in the field of eurythmy. In addition to physical work, guest lecturers give morning classes on various topics, such as youth anthroposophy, psychology, and art. In the afternoons, we work on the program. The rehearsal phase takes place in Kassel from September to Christmas 2026. During this time, participants stay with host families at a reasonable price. From the beginning of January to Easter 2027, we will go on a major tour with around 90 performances. In addition to performances in European countries, a stay on another continent is also planned. Last time we were in Brazil.
Where does the artistic inspiration for the piece come from?
In order to create pieces with a powerful message, we develop the content from within the group itself. While adhering to the laws of the stage, we want to realize a dramaturgically well-designed performance. Contemporary issues that affect us are addressed, as is authentic musical content. Our experience has shown that there is a great deal of potential in the individual participants that wants to be realized. However, the greatest necessity for such a project is its up-to-date implementation.
What do participants take away from the six months?
Our goal is to give them an overview and orientation for life. Participants have very extreme experiences not only during rehearsals, but especially during the tour. Experiences of the self and the Other, for example: “I only exist because the Other exists.” Through dialogue with the audience and the experience during the tour, most young people leave this project with a strong sense of self-confidence, social awareness, and presence. Seventy percent of former participants went on to study eurythmy.
