Giving Something to the World

Nagomari, Georgia. Antonia Hugo from Germany is one of the youngest members of the Free University in Nagomari, Georgia. Here, she reports on her experience.

I am taking part in this project to clarify the question of peace for myself. I want to know what peace means and how I can live in it. I hope to find young people with whom I can work intensively on this together. I want to contribute my full support and learn in the process. There is a lot going on every day: looking after animals, cooking, washing dishes, making a fire, doing the housework, gardening, group meetings, preparing for courses and festivals, shopping. We strive to give something to the world. We want to find out what is a healthy way to practice both art and agriculture—in harmony with the world, living beings and ourselves. Working with the earth makes me feel peaceful. It makes me feel more strongly that I am now on the earth and a part of it. It awakens my interest and my connection with this world, its people and events. I feel that this interest is essential in order to develop a genuine interest in peace. For me, practicing art in a healthy way means that it serves a higher purpose. I see art as a way to perceive finer levels that lie between us or within myself and to develop more awareness and understanding of situations, people, or myself. I have the feeling that completely different ways and a new awareness are needed to create sustainable peace. A healthy way of practicing art can serve as a support. Conflicts occur naturally in our community. To resolve them, we work together, communicate with each other, try to understand each other and respect each other’s differences. We strive to be honest with each other.
