At the “Reading and Understanding Rudolf Steiner” conference in May at the Goetheanum, seven speakers will present on seven books by Rudolf Steiner. The conference will also be guided by what the Egyptologist Frank Teichmann has taught in his seminars for decades: the threefold meaning or “sense” of scripture, originally elaborated by Origen of Alexandria in the 2nd century. First we have the literal sense: grasping the content rationally. This is followed by the moral sense: recognizing the composition of the work. The third is an ascension, in which the art of surveying thoughts on a tableau succeeds, and in reading, we transcend time. In this issue you’ll find four aids to reading that move from the first to the second and perhaps, in some passages, from the second to the third.
