Düsseldorf, Germany. The artist’s place of work is open for tours.
The building with the white façade and the large wooden entrance portal at Drakeplatz 4 in the Oberkassel district is known as a studio house where the Düsseldorf art scene came together in the 20th century. The most famous former resident is probably the professor, sculptor, and performance artist Joseph Beuys. He initially rented the house and bought it in 1983. After his death three years later, number 4 Drakeplatz remained in family ownership and was taken over by the Brunhilde Moll Foundation in 2021. The foundation has now opened Beuys’ former home and place of work to the public. Anyone interested can visit the inside of the house and also see a presentation of around 60 works from Beuys’ creative period as well as photos from his life and work at Drakeplatz. The house has been carefully redesigned and modernized by the foundation, but some furnishing details that go back to Beuys himself have remained. These include, for example, a small, homemade pond in the courtyard and a bathroom tiled entirely in pink. In the future, the house will also be occupied by art scholarship holders and be a venue for discussions and performances.
