Chicago, USA. U.S. university restricts AI use.
Starting in the fall semester of 2026, the Department of Social Sciences at the University of Chicago will prohibit the use of AI in all introductory courses. Effective immediately, these courses will be conducted exclusively in person: laptops, smartphones, tablets, and even smartwatches are banned from the classroom. In-person attendance is mandatory; lectures and seminars will no longer be recorded. Exceptions will be made only if they serve the learning process. The university’s law school had also established similar rules back in the summer. According to University President Paul Alivisatos, the goal is to give students the freedom to think for themselves, listen to one another without an artificial voice in the classroom, change their minds, and make decisions to the best of their ability—even if that includes making mistakes.
