A Happy Heart

Lima, Peru. A Waldorf education project in Peru.

Sonqo Kusichiy is an educational and social project in the Peruvian capital of Lima. It is located in the Carapongo Valley, part of the Lurigancho-Chosica district. The area is characterized by material poverty, which often leads to juvenile delinquency. This is where Sonqo Kusichiy comes in – the project is aimed primarily at children and young people, based on the strong belief that the right support can help young people in particular to realize their hidden potential.

The name Sonqo Kusichiy originates from the indigenous Quechua language group and means “a joyful heart.” The project has been in existence since 2013. It began as an extracurricular program where children could attend free art classes and workshops based on Waldorf education principles. Over time, a kindergarten was established on the premises, followed by the Puente del Sol Waldorf School. Most of the children and young people who attend the facilities and afternoon programs come from precarious family and economic backgrounds. The teachers and Peruvian and international volunteers at Sonqo Kusichiy, the kindergarten, and the school strive to provide the attention and care that these children lack at home.

Their work is long-term: it is not about short-term solutions, but about providing young people with sustainable life skills. In addition to lessons, the children and young people have the opportunity to develop their musical, artistic, and craft skills. The courses on offer include music, painting, crafts, gardening, circus, theater, and various languages. The courses and lessons are embedded in an atmosphere of appreciation and respect. In order to initiate change in the family environment, the project also offers a school for parents. Another element of the work at Sonqo Kusichiy and Puente del Sol is strengthening the cultural roots of the children and young people. Many activities are based on Peruvian traditions and holidays in order to promote cultural consciousness.
