What began in the late 1970s with the founding couple Enrique Winzer and Lieselotte Felk’s enthusiasm for biodynamic agriculture evolved into a key hub for anthroposophical practice in the Canary Islands. Through visiting physicians, therapists, and farmers, ideas regarding biodynamics and Waldorf education spread to neighboring islands as well.

The Centro opened in 1993 as a center for therapy and healing, offering medical supervision and therapeutic treatments. Some guests eventually settled on the island, leading to the establishment of a Waldorf kindergarten closely linked to the Centro. The Centro has always been a place of connection, too—a spot where members of The Christian Community, researchers of spiritual science, and exhausted Waldorf teachers could meet far from home. Amidst the striking volcanic rock and the Atlantic waves, many leaders of anthroposophical institutions found renewed strength.

The COVID-19 pandemic placed the facility—with its 65 apartments—in a challenging position. Fortunately, a dedicated board team (comprising some former regular guests) stepped up and has held responsibility since 2021.

Now, a generational shift is on the horizon: a new management team is sought for the summer of 2027—leaders who will preserve the spirit of the place while also bringing fresh inspiration. Succession processes often raise the question of what exactly constitutes the “spirit” of a place. To me, the Centro is more than just a place of relaxation; it is something of a “destiny stopover,” disguised as a holiday resort.

Anyone with experience in hospitality, the hotel industry, and cultural management—and who can envision living and working on a volcanic island—is invited to apply.

More Schindler und von der Gathen und Centro Anthoposófico

Translation Paula Boslau
Image Jonas von der Gathen

Puerto del Carmen, Spanien.
