This year, the ongoing drought in parts of southern Germany has led to serious crop failures in animal feed. Agricultural businesses therefore had to resort to using supplies that were intended for winter and emergencies. Some organic farms were also forced to buy conventionally grown hay in order to feed their animals. In response to the challenges, German organic farming associations have now founded a Drought-Taskforce to support organic farms in distributing feed in Germany and Italy as well as in determining needs, optimizing rations and planning stocks. Within a cross-country and cross-association network, organic feed should be brought promptly to where it is needed most.
