Time marches on. Within the anthroposophic medicine (AM) movement, among the major shareholders, and at Weleda, the focus has shifted to new issues. The rejuvenation of the brand and the accelerated growth of the cosmetics division were successful, but that came at a price. Now there are other issues that require attention and resources. This has been recognized and the issues are being worked on.

Further steps are needed to maintain a healthy equity ratio (and, by extension, the company’s independence) as well as to restore the ability to pay dividends; the board of directors and management are currently working on these steps. Shareholders and participants are anticipating these dividends. As cultural institutions for higher learning, research, and training, the Goetheanum and the Arlesheim Clinic need these funds—the fruits of which will undoubtedly strengthen Weleda in the long term.

The anthroposophic medical movement now finds itself in opposition to official policy in Germany. This summer health insurance companies stopped covering the cost of anthroposophic remedies. The reason given: their effectiveness has not been scientifically proven. This assessment did not come about overnight, but it is now a fact. The entire AM movement is in a challenging situation. And this applies, in a new way, to Weleda and all other manufacturers of anthroposophic medicines. How can this crisis (and Weleda’s pharmaceutical division has been in crisis for quite some time) be used to generate new momentum for an anthroposophic medicine that is firmly rooted in society?

Despite a strong first half-year in sales in the cosmetics sector, Weleda faces intense challenges as fall begins.

Translation Laura Liska
Image Tina Müller (CEO of Weleda), Thomas Jorberg, and Ueli Hurter (members of the Weleda Board of Directors) in conversation with Wolfgang Held; photo: Eliza Rozeboom

Weleda’s shareholders’ meeting and the interview took place over three months ago at the end of May 2026.
