It also showed me the possibility of a conventional life path and how, wrapped up in anti-human bureaucracy and dogma, it could shroud my life goals and self-expression. After completing the education required of me by the state\u2014and in lieu of pursuing \u201chigher education\u201d\u2014I left my home in Los Angeles, California for an interfaith meditation retreat center in rural Brazil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On day one there I was meditating morning and evening, taking care of horses, and building a shed with an illiterate\u2014yet extremely skilled and wise local man.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meditation immediately became a practice for reading my inner world and preparing my soul to read the outer world. In farming, there was character development through hard work, and a thousand exercises in critical thinking and execution posed throughout the day. Coming from the inner city of LA, everything in the countryside was a fascinating question, and I loved learning its language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All of a sudden, my reality transformed from a wall of apathy and impossibility to a series of riddles waiting to be answered.
