The US is also one of the first countries to promote the use of these digital technologies in schools and universities, and in some cases, has even made their use legally mandatory.

However, for several years now, a growing body of research has indicated that almost unrestricted access to the internet, and more recently to AI bots, does more harm than good to students. While laptops and tablets in classrooms and lecture halls remain commonplace, some parents and teachers have started critically questioning this and, as a result, are advocating for more analog learning methods. More and more mothers and fathers are exempting their children from using digital devices, citing studies showing that excessive screen time leads to poorer academic performance and that content presented on paper is better retained.

Teachers at schools and universities are also facing a trust issue due to the widespread access to the internet and, above all, AI chatbots. They don’t know whether students are completing assignments independently or whether they are bypassing their own learning by using digital technologies. Ayşe Baltacıoğlu-Brammer, a professor of history and Islamic studies at New York University, has therefore banned the use of laptops and tablets in her classes and instead provided students with paper notebooks. Although some initially doubted her decision, Baltacıoğlu-Brammer now receives positive feedback from students about her technology-free teaching. She says that while the change has added a bit more workload for her, the improved attention and engagement of her students is worth it.

Sources NBC News and Business Insider

Translation Paula Boslau
Image Dom Fou

Thousand Oaks / New York City, USA.
