The view from the center\u2014a summation of all genes, that is, the genome\u2014belongs together with the view from the periphery\u2014the living proteins of the cell, the tissues, the organs, the interrelationships within the organism, and the organism\u2019s embeddedness in its habitat, its <em>oikos<\/em> [Gk. <em>\u03bf\u1f36\u03ba\u03bf\u03c2<\/em>, household, dwelling place].
